Letters to the Editor
Sir, The spate of suicides by farmers in Andhra Pradesh is heart rending. The Congress had made farmers' suicide an electoral issue and blamed the increasing numbers on the Chandrababu Naidu regime. This problem should not have been made a political issue. It should be seen humanely and dealt with sensitively.
K.M.K. Murthy,
Sir, Despite the compensation packages and introduction of free power by the new Government of Andhra Pradesh, suicide by farmers is on the rise. The root cause for crop failure is the non-availability of sufficient water or no water at all. Every year, huge volumes of water from rivers go into the sea, which can be effectively tapped by constructing reservoirs and pumping stations.
K. Vishnu Prasanna,
Sir, That the farmers' woes continue shows that they are plagued by many problems such as short supply of good seeds, lack of crop insurance, short supply of water, poor storage facilities, etc. Providing free electricity is no answer.
D.V. Rama Krishna,
