BANGALORE, MAY 27. The investigation of the stamp paper scam has revealed that printing presses in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are still producing and selling fake stamp papers. Sources in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told The Hindu that the interrogation of the persons arrested after Wednesday's raids and those arrested earlier had revealed that the racket was still alive in the rural areas of the two States. The sources said the quality of the fake stamp papers produced by these presses was poor, and only those who had not seen stamp papers or used them only rarely were duped. The sources said the interrogation of those arrested earlier, including the prime accused, Abdul Karim Telgi, had revealed that fake stamp papers were still being printed on a large scale near the Bangalore City Railway Station. The premises in the city raided on Wednesday were near the railway station. The raids on the two printing presses in Bellary too followed information gathered in the same way. However, at present, it was not possible to pinpoint any other locality where fake stamp papers were being printed. Further interrogation of the accused might provide information, the sources said. They said the documentation of Wednesday's raids was in progress. The CBI was not in a position to say whether those arrested had any connection with Telgi. Remanded in CBI custody: The Bangalore Urban District Economic Offences Court on Thursday remanded three alleged associates of Telgi in the custody of the CBI till June 4. Raghavendra Prasad, M. Ramachandra, and Munna Reddy, who were arrested by the CBI on Wednesday on charges of printing and circulating fake stamps, were produced before the judge, J.M. Khaji, who remanded them in CBI custody.
