KSRP constable dies as rifle goes off

MYSORE, MAY 27. A constable of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) on duty with the Special Task Force (STF) set up to catch the forest brigand, Veerappan, died on Thursday when his rifle went off accidentally.

The police gave the name of the constable as Vasanth Kumar (30), a native of Arkalgud in Hassan district. They said the accident occurred at the Gundal STF camp at Kollegal when Vasanth Kumar was cleaning the rifle. The constable died while being brought to Mysore for treatment. Vasanth Kumar was attached to the seventh battalion of the KSRP based in Mangalore, and had reported at the Gundal camp only recently.

According to sources, the constable who suffered a serious abdominal injury was administered first aid before he was rushed to Mysore for further treatment.
