Pass percentage comes down

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, MAY 27. It was a shower of State ranks on Madurai in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate and Matriculation examinations, the results of which were released today. Ending the drought of State ranks, four girls swept the results with one girl securing State second rank in the SSLC examinations while three girls made a big mark in the Matriculation examinations by bagging the first, second and third ranks at the State-level. However, in contrast, this year pass percentage in Madurai district in the State Board examinations has declined to 84.1 per cent from 87 per cent registered last year.

The Education department and schools were elated as, B. Janani, of Nirmala Girls Higher Secondary School, got the State second rank in the SSLC examination with 493 marks out of 500.

Three girls from T. V. S. Lakshmi Matriculation Higher Secondary School — A. Uttara, V. Swarna and Rukma Krithiga — achieved the State first, second and third ranks in the Matriculation examinations. The results were very impressive when compared to the higher secondary examinations. The Matriculation State topper got 1,068 marks out of 1,100 and the second and third rankers got 1,067 and 1,064 marks respectively.

Even as the district made it big in the rank list, the overall pass percentage in the SSLC had come down to 83.1 per cent, according to T. Kanna Kalyanasundaram, Chief Educational Officer.

Of the total of 27,151 candidates who appeared for the State Board examinations this year, 22,843 had passed giving the district a 84.1 per cent pass percentage which is four per cent lower than last year. Altogether, 26 schools have registered 100 per cent pass in the three educational districts of Madurai, Melur and Usilampatti. So far, the State ranks seemed to be the forte of districts such as Chennai, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin but this year, for the first time in recent years, Madurai has got a State rank," the CEO said, adding that the difference between the first and second ranks was only two marks, which was impressive. The district's pass percentage was also higher than the State average of 77.4 per cent, he said.

The SSLC toppers in Madurai district are: B. Janani (State rank holder), B. Jagan of St. Britto Higher Secondary School with 490 marks and R. Meenakumari of Avvai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School with 489 marks.

In the Matriculation examinations, the district registered a 91 per cent pass with 3,930 candidates out of 4,334 coming out successful. Totally, 55 schools secured cent per cent pass this year. For the Anglo-Indian Board Examinations, of the 87 students who appeared for the examinations, 76 passed.
