Drive to remove dead trees

BANGALORE, MAY 27. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has launched a drive to remove dead trees and branches that pose danger to people. Saplings will be planted in places from where dead trees are removed.

Nearly 26 trees were uprooted and branches of 300 trees damaged in the heavy rain that lashed the city recently. Traffic in parts of the city was disrupted because of this. Subsequently, the Mahanagara Palike's Horticulture Department conducted a survey of dead trees and branches that pose danger to life and property. Personnel from the department launched the drive on Wednesday, according to a press release.

It said three dead trees had been identified on Nruptunga Road. Branches of 10 trees had been pruned and saplings planted on roadside. Of the 300 trees identified in Jayanagar, Binnypet and Basavanagudi, branches of 40 had been pruned. Branches of 90 trees would be pruned in Kamakshipalya, Basaveshwaranagar and on Siddaiah Puranik Road. A survey had been taken up on Kasturba Road and Raja Ram Mohan Roy Road.

The release said the Mahanagara Palike had made arrangements to meet any emergency in the event of heavy rain. Rescue teams for the purpose had been formed at the Mahanagara Palike control room, head office and zonal offices. The teams would function round-the-clock, it added.
