China in Nuclear Suppliers Group

BEIJING, MAY 28. China, a major nuclear power, today became a full-fledged member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) as part of the Communist giant's efforts to join the international community's efforts to curb the spread of weapons of mass destruction.The annual conference of the NSG agreed in Gothenburg, Sweden today to accept China as a member of the organisation, Xinhua news agency quoted an official with the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence as saying. ``China's accession to the NSG contributes tremendously to the international non-proliferation effort,'' said the commission's Vice-Minister Zhang Huazhu. The NSG, founded in 1975, had 40 members before China's accession.
