Yahoo toolbar with free anti-spy software

By Anand Parthasarathy

BANGALORE, MAY 28. The toolbar available for download from Yahoo, the web's best-known portal, today offered a new service that will help surfers detect and stop malicious "spyware" in their tracks. The "anti-spy" solution blocks bits of software that try to surreptitiously gather information about persons by rummaging in their personal computers, looking for personal details in password files and user profiles.

The new tool which is now in beta or trial stage, has been sourced by Yahoo from an anti-spyware company called PestPatrol and can be downloaded freely for a limited time along with the Yahoo toolbar. The download from http://beta.toolbar.yahoo.com/antispyware takes about five minutes with a telephone connection and modem. The bar — a short cut to various Yahoo services — also includes another button that blocks those annoying "pop up" type advertisements.

A number of anti-spyware software tools are available — most of them priced — and this is the first time a major web portal is offering it free.
