U.S. Senator writes to Manmohan

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

WASHINGTON, MAY 28. George Voinovich, Republican Senator from Ohio, United States, has written to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, congratulating him on his appointment and announced that he had joined the United States Senate Caucus on India. "I look forward to working with you in this new capacity and wish you all the best in the coming months and years," he said.

The Senator from the mid-western state recalled his meeting in New Delhi with Dr. Singh in 1996. "While serving as Minister of Finance you made significant contributions to India's efforts to promote economic reform. You were also helpful in working to resolve a matter relating to an Ohio company which I greatly appreciated."

Mr. Voinovich told Dr. Singh that as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and sitting on the Sub-Committee on Near-Eastern and South Asian Affairs he continued to pay "close attention" to the developments in India.

"I also serve as a member of the Senate Caucus on India which was formed this Spring to promote cooperation and understanding between the United States and India. It is my hope that we can work together on issues of concern to our countries," Mr. Voinovich told Dr. Singh.
