Implement KERC order: CPI(M)

By Our Staff Reporter

Bangalore May 28. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded the speedy implementation of a recent Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) order on collecting two months' minimum security deposit. A note from the party condemned Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL) for saying it would not implement the KERC order. While lauding the KERC for its "pro-consumer decision," the CPI(M) labelled KPTCL "anti-consumer" and termed its stance an "act of arrogance." The verdict in the recent elections was clear. "The Government has to bring in pro-people electricity policies," the note added.

Padayatra to save tank

By Our Staff Reporter

Bangalore May 28. About 300 people will set out on a padayatra on Sunday to spread awareness about large-scale encroachments in the catchment area of the Arkavathi. According to V. Srinivasa Raju of Navachetana Trust, which is organising the padayatra, encroachments in the area and especially around the nearby Hessaraghatta tank have reached "alarming proportions." Rules and regulations on preserving the catchment area have been blatantly disregarded. "The padayatra is an attempt to involve the community in preserving the tank. They must realise that saving the river is important for their own future and that of Bangalore," Mr. Raju told presspersons here today. He said the tank was in bad shape. "The padayatra is meant to mobilise public opinion on the need to conserve water and to present a united front against vested interests destroying the area," he explained. He said the trust aimed to form a network of like-minded non-governmental organisations and local people. The padayatra will begin at 9 a.m. from the Hessaraghatta tank and will end at Makali village around 1 p.m.

"Despite the passage of more than 26 months, the concession agreement was not approved by the Centre. The Union Cabinet's approval for the project in January 2004 contained a number of changes which were not conducive to the project," he added. The Government looked forward to receiving formal approval for the concession agreement, which would clear the decks for construction immediately so that the project could be ready within 33 months, Mr. Krishna said.
