PUDUKOTTAI, MAY 28. The Centre has sanctioned a sum of Rs. 12.75 crores under the Prime Minister's Gram Sadak Yojana to Pudukottai district for laying roads in rural areas. The district administration received 50 per cent of the amount a couple of months ago but no work could be undertaken immediately in view of the Lok Sabha elections. The habitations where roads would be laid are Gandarvakottai, Thiruvarankulam, Karambakudy, Annavasal, Viralimalai, Kunnandarkoil, Ponnamaravathy, Avudaiyarkoil, Karambakudi, Thirumayam and Arimalam. Official sources told The Hindu that preliminary works had begun at Gandarvakottai, Thiruvarankulam, Annavasal, Viralimalai and Karambakudi blocks. Works in other blocks would commence in a week. A total of 37 works would be taken up in the first phase. New roads for a total length of 110.61 km would be laid. Construction of drainage works would also be undertaken, for which about 450 RCC pipes had been procured. The district administration has identified these habitations, which have a population of 500 to 1,000 but do not have proper road connectivity. Under the scheme, new roads would be laid wherever there were no roads, and existing roads would be upgraded wherever necessary. At present, the focus was on laying new roads. In due course of time, improvement of existing roads would be taken up. The administration had prepared a detailed list of habitations where there were no proper roads and where improvement of existing roads was required. This is the first time that the district had received the highest ever allocation under the scheme ever since it was introduced in Pudukottai, sources said. During the last two years, the district received a sum of Rs. 6 crores with which 29 new roads were laid and seven existing roads were upgraded. The State Government would provide fund for maintenance of the roads executed under this scheme.
