Rs. 2.2 crores for MGR Race Course Stadium
MADURAI,
MAY 28.
The State Government has sanctioned Rs. 2.2 crores for improving the infrastructure at the MGR Race Course Stadium, said P.W.C. Davidar, member-secretary, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, here today.
Speaking to newspersons, he said a synthetic track would be laid at a cost of Rs. 2 crores and the remaining amount would be spent for creating facilities for tennis, squash, boxing, fencing and gymnastics. The works would be completed within a year.
The construction of a swimming pool would be completed as and when the public contribution target was reached. So far the public had contributed Rs. 8.5 lakhs, Mr. Davidar said.
The World Beaters Talent Spotting Scheme, introduced last year had been a great success. Nearly 20,000 boys and girls from standard VI to VIII had participated in the inaugural year and this year the participation was 30, 000, he said. Competitions were conducted at nine centres and 50 had been selected to join the Sprint and Jump Academy at Madurai, he added. Our Correspondent
