Bengal thrashes Orissa
KOLKATA,
MAY 28.
Defending champion Bengal thrashed East Zone topper Orissa 7-0 in a second round Group `B' quarterfinal league match of the 13th National under-21 football championship for the M. Dutta Roy Trophy being held at Jamalpur in Bihar's Munger district, according to information received here.
In another match in the same group, West Zone champion, Goa got past Manipur 2-1. The four-team group league table now has Bengal leading the race with six points from two consecutive wins while Manipur and Goa are next on three points from a win and a loss each. Orissa has drawn a blank so far.
Bengal's win was realised by contributions from strikers Rahim Nabi and Lalkamal Bhowmick, who shared four goals, while Asto Karar, Suraj Mondal and Kartik Kai accounted for one apiece.
The Goa-Manipur tie was keenly contested but the western champion worked on a better tactical game finding the target twice in a span of five minutes. Striker Zico D'Souza drew the first blood in the 45th minute before Rodrigues fetched the insurance strike in the 50th minute. Manipur fought back but managed to score only through Bijeshor Singh in the 70th minute. Our Sports Reporter
