Naik and Raje miss centuries

MUMBAI, MAY 28. Vijay Manjrekar XI's Prashant Naik played a captain's knock but missed a century by three runs against Vijay Merchant XI in the third and final league round match of the 18th The Sportstar Trophy (under-19) Mumbai Cricket Association selection trial tournament at the National CC, Cross Maidan, on Friday.

After a delayed start owing to a damp pitch, Manjrekar lost two early wickets to the mediumpacers, but opener Pratap Kavadi and Naik set things right with a partnership of 70 for the third wicket.

Naik, in good nick throughout the three-week tournament, dominated the fourth wicket stand of 104 with Ronak Sachdeva. Looking good to notch up his first century of the tournament, Naik decided to give off-spinner Siddharth Chitnis the charge and was stumped. He faced 167 balls and struck 15 fours.

In the second match between Khandu Rangnekar XI and Dattu Phadkar XI, Rohan Raje fell short of a century by eight runs. Electing to bat, Rangnekar was floundering at 165 for six before Raje and Joshil Sukhani forged a stand of 94 for the seventh wicket.

Raje was eight short when he edged to the 'keeper. Shoaib Shaikh, who did well with the bat and ball in previous matches, made a valuable half-century for Rangnekar.

The scores:

Vijay Manjrekar XI 211 for four (Pratap Kavadi 33, Prashant Naik 97, Ronak Sachdeva 49 batting) vs Vijay Merchant XI, at National CC.

Khandu Rangnekar XI 284 for seven (Zameer Ali 32, Shoaib Shaikh 54, Rohan Raje 92, Joshil Sukhani 39 batting, Sanket Bhaye three for 48) v Dattu Phadkar XI, at Karnataka SA. — Our Special Correspondent
