PALAKKAD, MAY 28: Farmers of Chittur who are depending on the inter-State Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) water for paddy cultivation have threatened to re-start their agitation for water from June first week. The PAP Water Protection Committee of the farmers of Chittur taluk had resorted to an agitation at Anikkode junction for more than a month demanding that the State Government get the due share of water from PAP for the second crop of paddy under the Chitturpuzha Irrigation Scheme. But they did not get water as Tamil Nadu refused to release it under the plea that there was shortage of water in Parambikulam and Aliyar dams. Thus paddy cultivation in more than 20,000 acres was lost due to the lack of water in Chittur taluk. Under the PAP agreement, 7.25 TMC of water has to be released for Chitturpuzha annually for the cultivation of paddy in two crops. But instead of getting 7.889 TMC (7.25 TMC of the present year plus the carry over of the previous year), Chitturpuzha got only 4.12 TMC. This has resulted in the destruction of paddy crop at the flowering stage itself. Though there was rain due to the early arrival of monsoon, it has not helped farmers of Chittur as they used to go for dry sowing in May. But this time, due to the rain they could not do dry sowing thereby delaying the first crop by a month.
