Somaiah triumphs

BANGALORE, MAY 28. C.G. Somaiah won the Eagleton South Zone golf tournament in category `A'. Somaiah carded 10-over 82 but still had an eight-stroke lead over Prabhat Jadhav on Friday. Jadhav, who along with Udayan Mane (in category `B') had the day's best card of 81, pipped Bhavna Shetty by one stroke to take the runner-up slot.

In the final round, Somaiah began with a bogey and including double bogeys on the sixth and 12th had nine bad holes. A solitary birdie on the concluding hole saw him return 10-over 82 for the day. Shetty ended up 14-over and Jadhav of Bangalore Golf Club won the second spot in a tight finish.

In category `B' (13-14 years), N. Sharmila, an eighth standard student of Bishop Cotton's Girls School, staved off a stiff challenge from Udyan Mane to win by a stroke. Sharmila an 11-handicap player has a hole in one to her credit at the KGA and was also a winner of the silver division in the South India Amateurs tournament in Chennai last year.

A close finish also was witnessed in category `C' (11-12 years). Rahul Shankar of BGC Bangalore won by a stroke, overcoming a stiff challenge from Jairus Antony of MGC, Chennai. Shankar, who led by five strokes on the opening day saw Antony bridge the gap. Antony, however, was a stroke shy of Shankar at the end of the second round.

Krishna Bhat of Eagleton was a clear winner in the `D' section (under-10), winning the title by a margin of five stokes from Akash Srinivasan, also of Eagleton.

Category `B' (13-14 yrs.): 1. N. Sharmila (85, 86) 171; 2. Udayan Mane (91, 81) 172; 3. Wayne Dodsworth (100, 91) 191; 4. Keshav Rajan (98, 95) 193; 5. Abhinav Suresh (91, 107) 198; 6. R Shashank (108, 98) 206; Vidwath Shetty (113, 113) 226.

Category `C' (11-12 yrs.): 1. Rahul Shankar (100, 107) 207; 2. Jairus Antony (102, 106) 208; 3. Prannoy Jacob (107, 112) 219; 4. Namith Gambhir (111, 113) 224; 5. Sarthak Verma (116, 110) 226.

Category `D' (under-10): 1. Krishna Bhat (102, 95) 197; 2. Akash Srinivasan (102, 100) 202; 3. Shiv Nariane (104, 105) 209; 4. Raghav Sarda (132, 145) 277.
