KHARAGPUR, MAY 29. Professor J.C. Misra of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, has bagged this year's Raja Ram Mohun Roy award in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of mathematics. This is the first time that a mathematician has received this award. "My work has been primarily concerned with the construction of a bridge between mathematics and health sciences," says Prof. Misra, who developed several mathematical models of important physiological systems with the objective of exploring some definite information for improving treatment modalities of clinicians. Four others, including the renowned astrophysicist Dr. J.V. Narlikar, a former director of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, have won the award this year. Each of them received a cash award of Rs. 5 lakhs and a citation.
