Takeover of TCM land: GCDA sets up panel

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, MAY 29. The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has set up a committee to look into the feasibility of taking over the land belonging to TCM Company in South Kalamassery.

The decision was taken at the general council meeting of the GCDA here today. The committee was formed following a section of the council expressed doubts about the feasibility of the move.

The committee comprising K. Mohammed Ali, K. Babu and V.D. Satheesan, MLAs and K.N. Marzook, another member of the GCDA general council, will visit the TCM premises on June 11 to make an on-the-spot assessment of the land.

The TCM land is being considered for takeover in tune with the GCDA's policy of developing the suburbs.

One of the key factors that attracted the GCDA to the 21.45-acre land is the half-a-kilometre water frontage it has. Besides, it is close to the National Highway 47.

The plot includes the industrial plant and residential buildings.

The TCM produced potassium chlorate, copper sulphate, copper oxychloride and sodium chlorate until it downed its shutters in 2002 following steep hike in electricity charges and excise duty. The company has about 300 employees on its rolls now and has already entered into agreements with trade unions regarding the laying off. The GCDA has been following a concept of developing riverfront property and the TCM Company plot is suited to the purpose of building residential complexes.

Earlier, a team of experts and town planners had visited the plot and approved the concept.
