MYSORE, MAY 29. The Union Minister of State for Planning, M.V. Rajashekaran, has said that the Government is contemplating a special package for the impoverished districts of north Karnataka. He was speaking to presspersons at a function here today organised by local Congress leaders to felicitate him. Mr. Rajashekaran said he was aware of the regional imbalances in the State and had also apprised himself of the recommendations made by the D.M. Nanjundappa committee on regional imbalances. "These districts need a special economic package for development and we are committed to it," he said. There was also a proposal to bring the backward districts of north Karnataka under the ambit of Article 371, which would give them special status in the implementation of various socio-economic and development programmes. Commenting on the drought relief funds released by the Centre, Mr. Rajashekaran said the State had been subjected to stepmotherly treatment in the provision of funds to undertake drought relief measures. Drawing attention to the resource crunch and the consequent cut in the plan outlay for developmental works, Mr. Rajashekaran said there was a need to curtail expenditure and canalise them towards funding such projects. "There is a need to curb expenditure at all levels so that funds can be better utilised," he said. Mr. Rajashekaran promised that the allocation due to the State would not be curtailed as feared in some quarters and said he would hold consultations with the State Government to identify priority areas for taking up developmental projects. Earlier, Mr. Rajashekaran visited the Suttur Math and sought the blessings of Shivarathrideshikendra Swami. He was then felicitated at the residence of Vasu, former Mayor. The litterateur D. Javaregowda was present.
