`Golden quadrilateral project apace'

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUMALA, MAY 29. National highways all over the country will be laid in accordance with international standards.

Talking to mediapersons, the Minister of State for Roads and Highways, K.H. Muniappa, said the proposed Golden quadrilateral project, aimed at linking all major metros in the country would be completed by 2007. The required instructions and financial clearance were given at a meeting with officials concerned of the State in New Delhi on Friday, he said.

In reply to another question, the Minister said financial assistance for the early completion of ongoing road works in the State would be provided on a priority basis.

With regard to the collection of toll fee on national as well as State highways, which of late has become a additional burden on small and marginal farmers, he said he would examine the issue. He said the United Progressive Alliance in its common minimum programme (CMP) also had emphasised the need for a special agriculture package for the uplift of small and marginal farmers. The toll fee issue also would be discussed before the finalisation of the package.

On the steep rise in road accidents, he said that safety measures would be strictly implemented.

The Minister, who reached Tirumala on Friday, offered prayers this morning.
