IOB strengthens grip on title

COIMBATORE, MAY 29. Defending champion Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), Chennai, played yet another solid game to beat Customs and Central Excise, Kochi, 95-81 for its second straight win in the semifinal league of the 46th all-India basketball tournament for the Nachimuthu Gounder Cup at the VOC Park Corporation sports complex courts here on Saturday.

IOB had a relatively slow, allowing the Kochi team to break open the defence time and again. But, thanks to Sugavaneshwar's stellar play, IOB managed to gain a six-point lead 54-48, at the end of the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Sugavaneshwar continued to attack from the right flank, forcing Customs to devote its resources to stop him. By guarding Sugavaneshwar, who looked threatening with his close-in shots, the Kochi men only messed up their scoring rate. At the end of the third quarter, IOB had a 77-72 lead. In the final quarter, Robinson, Chandrasekaran and Sugavaneshwar plundered points at will, demoralising the Customs side, which looked down and out a couple of minutes to the whistle.

In a late match on Friday, IOB defeated Indian Army (Delhi) 94-61.

In the third all-India basketball tournament for the CRI Pumps Trophy for women, Southern Railway, Chennai, knocked out Rising Star, also from Chennai, 56-26. M. Athirai notched up 11 points for the winner, while Deepa. G scored 14 for the losers.

The results (semifinal league):

Men: IOB (Chennai) 94 (Chandrasekaran 25, Robinson 14, Sugavaneshwar 22) bt Indian Army (Delhi) 61 (Phool Singh 13); Indian Overseas Bank bt Customs and Central Excise (Kochi) 95-81.
