All-round display by Satender

NEW DELHI, MAY 29. Satender Yadav took four wickets and then smashed a match-winning 84 to steer Malviya Club to an eight-wicket win against Sonnet Club in the quarterfinals of the Lala Raghubir Singh cricket tournament at the Modern School ground here on Saturday.

Electing to field, Malviya skittled Sonnet out for 220, a total inadequate to defend, considering the line-up of the opposition. Young opener Mayank Sidana excelled for Sonnet with a delightful knock of 95 of 86 balls. His nine fours and two sixes indicated his dominance aptly. Sonnet enjoyed a thumping start with Salil Oberoi cracking 29 with three fours and a six but then some unwise aggression by the top order saw Sonnet slide from a position of 156 for one at the halfway stage.

The loss of Deepak Joon, Yashpal Singh and Saket Bhatia cost Sonnet dearly even as skipper Devender Sharma tried to steady the innings. His unbeaten 29, however, failed to provide Sonnet the stage to call the shots as Yadav, bowling off-spin, did the damage by snaring Sidana, Joon, Yashpal and Suhail Sharma.

Malviya lost Abhishek Kaushik cheaply but Jaswinder Singh hit a 46 off 43 balls and then left the job for Yadav and Vikram to finish in style. Yadav, adjudged `man of the match, hit eight fours and two sixes off 69 balls while Dhariwal cracked six fours in his 73-ball essay.

The scores:

Sonnet 220 in 39.4 overs (Mayank Sidana 95, Deepak Joon 32, Satender Yadav four for 35, Praveen Thapar three for 35) lost to Malviya 221 for two in 36.1 overs (Satender Yadav 84 not out, Vikram Dhariwal 64 not out, Jaswinder Singh 46). — Our Special Correspondent
