Sheila reviews civic amenities in Bawana slums

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MAY 29. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, today visited the resettlement colonies in Bawana in North West Delhi and reiterated her Government's commitment and policy to ensure that whenever relocation of slums and "jhuggi jhopris'' (slums tenements) took place, the people being shifted out were not only provided with alternative plots but basic civic infrastructure such as sanitation, health, education, power, transport and water were also made available to them.

A part of her Government's policy to provide all basic amenities to relocated dwellers, the visit was also aimed at reviewing the status of various services being offered in the locality and overseeing the work of different government agencies and departments involved in providing them.

The Chief Minister, who was accompanied by the area MLA, Surender Kumar, and MCD Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta, also discussed various issues at hand with them and other senior officials of Food and Civil Supplies Department, DJB, DTC, Education Department and NDPL-Discom, which is responsible for power supply in the area.

Ms Dikshit, who had earlier visited Holambi Kalan, said she will be undertaking such inspections and review visits to other resettlement colonies like Jahangirpuri and Madanpur Khadar.

During the visit, she found that while ration shops, bus services, sanitation and education were being provided satisfactorily, the biggest problem was the non-availability of a cremation ground or a graveyard in the vicinity. As such, the Chief Minister assured that her Government would look into the matter and provide these facilities at the earliest. In the meantime, she ordered for immediate arrangement for transportation of the bodies from the area.

Ms Dikshit also instructed MCD to come up with a scheme of monthly passes for use of community toilets to ensure that they were not too expensive for the residents. She also instructed the Education Department officials to submit a report on the construction of new school buildings in the area and asked NDPL to expedite the provision of individual electricity connections to the people. Finally, the Chief Minister announced that she would review the progress of the works in the area within 10 days.
