Road repair works to begin soon: Mayor

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM MAY 29. All pending road repair works in the city would begin in a week's time, the Mayor, J. Chandra, has said.

She was presiding over the meeting of the Corporation council, here this evening.

The necessary orders have been obtained from the State Planning Board for the immediate release of tar that is necessary for beginning the repair works, she added. It was Mudavanmughal Rajasekharan, PTP Nagar ward councillor, who raised the issue about the bad condition of the roads, in the council. Many of the city's roads have become death-traps. For quite some time now, the stones required for repairing the roads had been piled up by the sides of the roads. In many places, these stones had spread over the roads, making them very unsafe for motorists, Mr. Rajashekaran pointed out. Replying to this, the Mayor said that there would not be any further delay in starting the repair works.

The council meeting decided not to grant any more bunk shops or public telephone booths in the city. Following protests from many council members over a resolution passed by the standing committee on planning, regarding the sanctioning of a telephone booth for an applicant, the Mayor informed the council that the Corporation would not entertain such applications - for booths or bunk shops - any more. "Please do not bring such resolutions to the council meetings," she said.

The meeting passed a resolution requesting the Government not to close down the sub-depot of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) at Valiathura. It was also decided to allow the Mayor to attend the conference of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum in London and to permit the Corporation to meet the expenses of her air travel from Thiruvananthapuram to Mumbai and back.

The council decided to convene `ward sabhas' in all the 81 wards from June 7 to 19. The announcement of the various working groups for the Kerala Development Project by A.J. Sukarno, councillor, led to heated objections. Cutting across party lines, the councillors protested that their inclusion in various working groups was done without consulting them. Following this, the Mayor assured the council that changes, wherever needed, would be made in the working groups, in consultation with the members. Based on this assurance, the council gave its approval for the list.

Before transacting its official business today, the council passed resolutions condoling the deaths of the former Chief Minister, E.K. Nayanar, and the former councillor and journalist, G. Venugopal.
