Belated wisdom?

Sir, — Wisdom seems to have dawned on L.K. Advani only after sending several crores of rupees down the drain. He has admitted that the catchphrases, "India Shining" and `feel good,' failed to click. This should serve as an eye-opener to all those in power who want to squander public money for making tall claims.

P.G. Menon,
Chennai

Sir, — Very few people have the grace to admit their folly. Mr. Advani has readily accepted that the catchphrases did not yield the desired results and also that the personal attack on Sonia Gandhi by some of his colleagues in the BJP damaged the reputation of his party.

Though belated, Mr. Advani has placed before the public the real factors that led to his party's debacle in the elections and this is commendable.

K. Govinda Bhat,
Aluva, Kerala

Sir, — This is with reference to the article, "Myth and reality" (May 29). Though the British Government was wrong in aiding the U.S. Government in its unjustified war against Iraq, its democratic policy towards its media is praiseworthy.

While the Blair Government and the BBC were fighting over the Andrew Gilligan report, the Government respected and honoured the BBC's right to defend itself and did not take recourse to repressive measures. Its willingness to accommodate criticism is what characterises the strong democratic foundations of the British society.

Aravind Sridhar,
New Delhi
