Girl killed in rain-related accident

BELLARY, MAY 30. A girl was killed and three were injured when a portion of the roof of a cinema hall fell after lightning struck the hall at Kottur town.

According to the police, lightning struck Renuka Cinema on Saturday evening causing the tragedy, besides uprooting trees and electric poles.

Power supply is yet to be restored in Kottur town.

In Bellary taluk, about 100 electric poles, three transformers, and about 50 trees were uprooted by gusty winds on Saturday evening. Also, 50 houses were damaged at Rupanagudi, Kammerchedu, and Rayapur villages and two buffaloes and five sheep were electrocuted in Lakshminagar camp.

All these villages are severely affected as drinking water supply has been stopped since Saturday following the disruption in power supply.

Reports arriving here said hailstorm accompanied by gusty winds also caused extensive damage to property in Bellary, Hospet, and Hadagali taluks.

At many places, concrete electric poles were seen broken into pieces.

The Tahasildar, Laxman Singh, accompanied by M.K. Patil, Executive Engineer, Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company, visited the affected villages and assessed the extent of damage.

Mr. Singh told presspersons that drinking water was being supplied through tankers to the villages and efforts were on to restore water supply.

Mr. Patil said all the electric poles that had fallen and old ones would be replaced in two days. Around 125 poles would be procured from a factory in Koppal immediately, he added.

The installation of transformers would also be completed by that time, he said.

Meanwhile, paddy crop grown in about 400 acres was destroyed by hailstorm at Angur, Byalahunise, Makarabbi, and Kotehal villages in Hadagali ealuk. According to the farmers, the damage was extensive as the yield would now be only five to eight bags of paddy an acre as against the anticipated 40 to 50 bags.

Thatched roofs of about 50 houses were blown away and several trees have been uprooted in the villages.

Banana plantations at Yerebylu village in Hospet taluk were severely damaged by the rain, according to reports reaching here.
