LONDON, MAY 30. A leading Indian barrister has pleaded with Queen Elizabeth to return the sword of Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji to India, saying it is a symbol of India's rich cultural heritage. ``The sword which was presented as a `gift' to the Prince of Wales, Edwards VII, during his visit to India in 1875 by the then Maharaja of Kolapore, is India's major cultural heritage of historical importance, and is of emotional value to the people of India,'' Bhasker Ghorpade said in a petition. He said several other countries have approached Britain for returning things of cultural importance and succeeded in retrieving them. The petition said ``thousands of manuscripts, which had been gifted to the King of Denmark, have been returned by Denmark to Iceland recently as an act of reasonableness and goodwill.'' Once returned to India, Mr. Ghorpade said, the sword would be preserved by Indian authorities and kept on display. The petition would be handed over to Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, the official Coronation Day of the Queen. PTI
