HYDERABAD, MAY 30. The Minister for Lift Irrigation, M. Mareppa, on Sunday signed his first file, sanctioning Rs. 40 crores for grounding of works pertaining to 18 Lift Irrigation schemes in eight districts of the State, aimed at bringing 16,000 acres under the plough. The eight districts comprise Adilabad, Guntur, Khammam, Krishna, Kurnool, Nizamabad, Prakasam, Vizianagaram and West Godavari. At a press conference after he occupied his chambers at the Secretariat on Sunday afternoon, he said the Andhra Pradesh State Irrigation Development Corporation (SIDC) was very dear to him, because he had worked there on deputation in the past. Asked about the fate of 250 employees who faced voluntary retirement, thanks to the previous Government's policies, he said their jobs would be protected. The salaries and arrears of close to 11 months due to them would be released as soon as possible. He would write to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on the matter and get the approval of the Legislative Assembly, he promised. Mr. Mareppa also said he would try to get G.O. 50 pertaining to VRS of SIDC employees scrapped.
