KUALA LUMPUR: A South African diplomat who disappeared in Malaysia was released on Sunday by unidentified people who held him captive for nearly a week, police said. The Deputy High Commissioner, Nicky Scholtz (in the picture), was last seen on May 23 leaving a hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian police and South African officials said. He was released early on Sunday, district police chief, Hadi Ho Abdullah, said. Other police officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Mr. Scholtz had been held against his will, but he was freed after Malaysian authorities on Saturday distributed photographs of Mr. Scholtz to the media and made a public appeal for help in tracing him. It was not clear why Mr. Scholtz was taken captive. Mr. Scholtz suffered minor bruises and was under observation in a hospital, but he was otherwise well, the officials said. He was released before dawn on Sunday and walked on his own to the South African High Commission in Kuala Lumpur. Mr. Scholtz previously served as an envoy to Taiwan, Indonesia and Hungary. AP
