DHAKA: Suspected Maoist rebels shot dead eight people outside their homes in a village in western Bangladesh, police said on Sunday. The slayings occurred late on Saturday in Baghdanga village in Kushtia district, 128 km west of the capital Dhaka, the area's senior police officer, Abdun Noor, said. He said the dead were called out from their homes, blindfolded by the attackers and then taken to a soccer field in the village, where they were killed. Police recovered the bullet-riddled bodies of the eight men, aged between 28 and 40, the official said. The outlawed Maoist guerrillas have waged an armed rebellion for more than three decades to establish a communist state in Muslim-majority Bangladesh. The rebels' campaign has left thousands dead. The rebels, active across northern and western Bangladesh, extort money from wealthy villagers and kill those who refuse their demands. AP
