Himachal Pradesh
By Our Special Correspondent
SHIMLA, MAY 30. The Himachal Pradesh Government is formulating a long-term plan of bringing water from river Sutlej which would cost Rs 300 crore to solve the drinking water problem of Shimla town and the nearby suburb. Disclosing this the State Chief Minister, Virbhadra Singh, said here today that survey and investigation work on the scheme is in progress. Mr. Virbhadra Singh said that this ambitious water supply scheme would fulfil the drinking water needs of people of Shimla and its suburbs for next over 25 years. He said that in addition to it, a Rs. 48 crore lift drinking water supply augmentation scheme with HUDCO funding had been approved. He said that Government was striving to beautify Shimla town to restore its pristine glory and importance. He said that the State Government was laying emphasis on sustained and planned development of the hill capital and the Government would not allow irregular construction and law would be enforced strictly. He urged the people to observe self-discipline in maintaining old glory of Shimla. He said that Government had made compulsory to incorporate rainwater harvesting in house plan and no maps would be passed without it. Expressing his concern over the degradation of environment due to use of plastic bags, he said that State Government had already banned the use of recycled, coloured and plastic bags of certain specific sizes as they are the biggest pollution hazards and are a non-biodegradable material. He appealed to the traders, shopkeepers, voluntary organizations and local people to come forward in avoiding the use of plastic bags. He sought the people's cooperation in making the State plastic free and urged the NGOs and other organizations to come forward to educate people in this direction so that no plastic bags should be allowed to enter the State.
