Separate mining zone planned

HYDERABAD: The Government is actively considering the creation of a separate mining zone in the State. The Government is in the process of commissioning surveys to assess mineral wealth in the State, according to the Minister for Mines and Geology, Sabitha Indra Reddy.

Talking to newsmen after occupying her chambers at the Secretariat on Sunday, she said that the State stood second both in natural resources and in generation of revenue.

The Department had itself set a target of collecting a revenue of Rs. 954 crores for 2004-05, in increase of Rs. 224 crores, almost 25 per cent from 2003-04.

RTC unions hail CM's move

HYDERABAD: The APSRTC National Mazdoor Union and the Employees' Union on Sunday welcomed instructions of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, calling for action against illegal transport operators.

In separate statements, P. Ram Mohan Rao, general secretary of the Mazdoor Union, urged workers all over the State to cooperate with the Government in the implementation of Dr. Reddy's instructions.

B. Rama Rao, president, and V. Raja Ramamohana Rao, general secretary of the Employees' Union, said the RTC was incurring losses due operation of lorries, contract carriages and maxicabs on its routes.

If this was to be checked, they pointed out, the vacant posts of motor vehicle inspectors should be filled and the police empowered to check illegal operations.

Telangana civic staff

seek `fair deal'

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Municipal Employees' Association at its emergency meeting here on Sunday discussed several problems facing them and the `injustice' meted out to Telangana employees during the last nine years.

The meeting decided to meet the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the Minister concerned to submit memoranda to them on the problems. It unanimously accepted the association president, L. Taj Mohan Reddy's announcement to donate two-day salary of the employees to free power to agriculture sector.

Issue of GO on user

charges urged

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Vyasaya Karmika Sangham on Sunday demanded immediate issue of orders to implement the GO on scrapping collection of user charges in Government hospitals.

P. Ramayya, president of the sangham, who has been elected to the Assembly, and B. Venkat, general secretary, in a statement issued here, while welcoming the new Government's decision on user charges, said people were looking forward to issue of orders.

They alleged that user charges were still being collected in some hospitals.

The sangham leaders called for intervention of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who holds the health portfolio in the absence of the Minister, to direct issue of orders.

HCL, BSNL merger sought

HYDERABAD: The Hindustan Cables Ltd Employees' Union, in a representation to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has sought the merger of HCL with the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited so as to utilise its manpower for manufacture of any electronic/electrical components used for BSNL.

J. Subba Rao, president, and K. Sarath Babu, general secretary, in a statement issued here, said since the merger may take sometime, the BSNL may be asked to place further orders with HCL, along with advance, as was done earlier. This would provide work for employees.

The union looks at the merger as a long-term solution and placement of orders along with advance as a short-term remedy for the benefit of the reduced manpower of 6,790.

HYDERABAD: The practical examinations of the Advanced Supplementary Intermediate Public examination will now be held from June 16 to 21, according to a press release.

Violence after murder

GUNTUR: In the aftermath of the murder of a Congress worker, Maddu Sivaramaiah, his followers destroyed houses of two of the relatives of the accused in the case -- Nookala Guru Lingam and Nookala Sivalingam -- at Morchampadu in Piduguralla mandal in Guntur district on Sunday.

While the body of Sivaramaiah was being taken out of his house, the enraged youth set fire to the household belongings of the two persons.

The Piduguralla police have registered a case and are investigating.

Congress workers also ransacked the houses of Manga Appa Rao, Sendala Gangaraju and Mungi Subbaiah, all belonging to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

Congress workers who accompanied the body of Sivaramaiah, after the post-mortem, were alleged to have stolen 40 tolas of gold from the houses.

CUDDAPAH: The Awaaz district convenor, S. Magbul Basha, and members -- Abbas Ali and Mahabub Basha -- hailed the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's announcement of five per cent reservations in education and employment to Muslim minorities. They urged special steps to generate employment for Muslim minorities.

NELLORE: The District Industries Centre has decided to arrange awareness programmes for educated youth interested in setting up small-scale industries in rural areas. The sessions will be held on June 2 at the Mandal Development Office (MDO), Kavali, on June 4, at District Industries Centre, Nellore, on June 7, at MDO's office at Gudur on June 9 at the TCPC, Nellore Palem, Atmakur.

KURNOOL: The Collector, Ajay Jain, has asked health officials to take immediate measures to control mosquito-borne diseases in view of the onset of monsoon.

Addressing a meeting of health, municipal and panchayat officials here on Saturday, he said the district was prone to malaria, dengue and encephalitis. The Superintendent of General Hospital, Hanumantharayudu, and others were present.

NELLORE: MIOT Hospitals, a super-speciality hospital of Chennai, has introduced an `Access Card' to cater to the needs of patients from the State.

The hospital's vice-president of corporate affairs, Paul Robin, and the marketing in-charge for Andhra Pradesh, S.V. Ramesh, told reporters here on Saturday that card holders would be eligible for free treatment for the first 24 hours in case of emergency during the night, besides waiver of advance.

Charitable trust anniversary

TIRUPATI: The 10th anniversary of Thirumalanambi Sri Venkateswara Kainkarya and Charitable Trust was celebrated on Saturday with the descendants of the great savant who was the maternal uncle of Sri Bhagavad Ramanuja, founder of the Srivaishnava Siddhantha, paying rich tributes to him.

Speakers at the function thanked the TTD Executive Officer, Ajeya Kallam, for agreeing to treat the Tirumalanambi Sannidhi, located close to the hill temple of Lord Venkateswara, as a heritage structure.

Assumes office

TIRUPATI: J. Lakshmana Rao of the Department of Physics, S.V. University College of Arts and Sciences on Saturday assumed office as Principal of the college. He succeeds, S. Jayarama Reddy.

Woman done to death

WARANGAL: Shamim (35) was done to death allegedly by her husband Iqbal (40) at Chinthal locality under the Mills Colony police station on Sunday.

According to the police, Iqbal, a mechanic by profession, used harass his wife for money. She had been working a beedi worker. On Sunday too, Iqbal came home drunk and demanded money from her. When Shamim expressed her inability to provide money, he allegedly killed her. Police registered a case against Iqbal who is absconding.
