Get Central aid, BJP urges YSR

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, MAY 30. The BJP urged the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to apprise the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, of the plight of farmers resorting to suicide in the State and request the Centre to come to their rescue.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, the State BJP leaders, B. Dattatreya, K. Hari Babu and K. Laxman, said that Central assistance was needed to tackle the situation. It was painful that despite appeals by the Chief Minister and relief announced by the State Government, farmers were ending their lives due to mounting debts and crop losses.

Stating that it would take some time for the benefits announced by the State Government to reach the farmers, they appealed to them to face the situation boldly. The BJP leaders also suggested that the Government take the help of all political parties in redressing the farmers' problems.

Referring to the statements of the TRS leaders and Union Ministers, K. Chandrasekahar Rao and A. Narendra, that separate Telangana would be formed in six months, they said that there was some confusion regarding the issue. With the Common Minimum Programme of the Congress stating that the issue of Telangana would be considered at an appropriate time and with consensus, there seems to be lack of consensus among the Congress high command, the State Congress and the TRS. This proved the BJP's stand that people of Telangana were being cheated, he claimed.

Replying to a question, the BJP leaders said that they were still committed to the Kakinada resolution on Telangana and their future stand would be decided by senior party leaders. They declined to comment on the demand in TDP ranks for snapping ties with the BJP, saying that their party was yet to review the election results. A review of each Assembly and parliamentary constituency would be taken up and analysed by the State executive at its meeting to be held here next month. Besides, the BJP and the TDP had not yet discussed the results, they added. The two came together on the basis of "principles" and not due to "opportunism", they said
