Retain anti-conversion law: BJP

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MAY 30. The State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party today urged the State Government to retain the Prevention of Forcible Religious Conversion Act and ensure its strict implementation to preserve communal harmony.

The State BJP executive adopted a resolution welcoming the government reversing measures of imposing income ceiling for receiving essential commodities under the Public Distribution System, withdrawal of free power for farm sector and free bus passes for students, action against government employees who participated in last year's strike and initiating defamation cases and privilege proceedings against the media.

But the party felt that the Government's decision to repeal the anti-conversion act was "unnecessary and unwarranted." The BJP supported the Act in view of its importance in preventing communal clashes.

Referring to objections raised by the Dravida munnetra Kazhagam leadership earlier to non-adherence to an accord reached between the party president, M.Karunanidhi, and the Congress leader, N. Janardhana Reddy, over allocation of portfolios, the executive said the agreement itself contravened the Constitution and convention.

Welcoming the United Progressive Alliance Government's promise to accord classical language status to Tamil, the executive said it should be implemented within a time-frame. The State BJP chief, C.P.Radhakrishnan, presided over the meeting, which was inaugurated by the party president, M.Venkaiah Naidu. The national BJP secretary, L.Ganesan, the State general secretary, H.Raja, and the Legislature party leader, K.N.Lakshmanan, participated.
