Efforts to put Kodaikanal on world tourism map

By Our Staff Reporter

KODAIKANAL, MAY 30 . The State Government has been increasing funds for the tourism sector continuously, to upgrade facilities in all prime tourist spots, V. Ramadas, Secretary, o Department of Tourism and Information, said today

He was speaking at the valedictory function of the summer festival held at Kodaikanal.

He said the allocation for the tourism sector this year was Rs.27 crores. The Department of Tourism made all efforts to propagate the tourist spots of Tamil Nadu. Efforts were also on to put Kodaikanal and Udhagamandalam on the world tourism map.

All roads in the hills and the approach road to the hill should be widened, as they were not sufficient to meet the growing vehicular traffic during the peak season. New parking lots should be created. Facilities should be provided to budget-tourists.

He appealed to the owners of hotels and restaurants not to increase room rent during the peak season, in order to increase the flow of tourists.

The Boat Club maintained by the Department Tourism in Kodaikanal would receive more boats shortly, to meet the demand for riding in the Kodaikanal lake. Orders were issued, he said.

Expressing concern over the poor flow of tourists to Kodaikanal this season, Mr. Ramadas lauded the security arrangements made by the police, and the facilities provided to the tourists by the district administration and the Kodaikanal municipality.

Later, he distributed prizes and rolling trophies to the winners of various sports competitions and the best display of flowers at the flower festival held at the Bryan Park during the summer festival.

The Collector, P. Senthil Kumar, appealed to the tourists to dispose of plastic items safely, to maintain the cleanliness of Kodaikanal.
