Cabinet to meet today

Bangalore May 30. The first meeting of the new Cabinet that will be held on Monday will discuss the formulation of the Government stand on the various aspects of admissions to professional colleges and the continuation of the drought relief works. As the full-fledged Ministry is yet to be sworn in, the meeting will be attended by the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah.

Appointed KPYC Secretary

TUMKUR May 30. K.R.Mahesh Wodeyar of Tumkur has been appointed Secretary of Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress (KPYC). This was announced in a communication by Manick Tagore, General Secretary of the Indian Youth Congress, who said that the appointment had been made by the Youth Congress President. Mr. Wodeyar was the president of the Tumkur district unit of National Students' Union of India. He hails from a village in C.N. Halli taluk in the district.

Process begins for Council polls

Belgaum May 30. The process for elections to Legislative Council from North-West Graduate and North-West Teachers' constituencies has been set in motion with the Election Commission issuing a notification announcing the calendar of events for the polls.

According to the Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner, B.S. Palaksha, here on Sunday, the nomination papers will be received from May 31 to June 7 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on all days, except general holidays, at his office here. Scrutiny of the nomination papers would take place at 11 a.m. on June 8. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 10. In the event of the election taking place, the polling will be held on June 23 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., he said.

Sanskrit exam. results today

Bangalore May 30. The Department of Information, Government of Karnataka, has said that results of the Sanskrit Prathama, Kavya, Sahitya, and Arabic Usthaniya and Foukaniya examinations, will be announced on Monday at 11 a.m. in the respective schools and colleges.

Suspended

CHITRADURGA MAY 30. Lokesh, a primary school teacher and president of the Holalkere Taluk Primary School Teachers' Association, was suspended on the charge of dereliction of duty by L. Rangappa, Deputy Director of Public Instructions, on Saturday evening.

According to sources, Lokesh reportedly misbehaved with senior officials of the department when they accused him of dereliction of duties.

Cancelled

CHITRADURGA MAY 30. Kuvempu University has cancelled affiliation to Sri Kote Sannaborappa Boramma First Grade College at Imangala in Hiriyur taluk.

A press release said the Syndicate of the university decided to cancel the affiliation to the college and no admission should be made to the first year degree course from this year at the college.

The release said students who would seek admission at the college should do so at their own risk.

Accused

HASSAN MAY 30. The Association of Managements of English-medium Schools has accused a few Kannada-medium schools in the district of cheating parents and children by claiming that they offer education in English.

The office-bearers of the association told presspersons here on Sunday that a few Kannada-medium schools were admitting children by misguiding parents.

The authorities concerned had failed to take action in this regard, they added.

Meters

HASSAN MAY 30. The Regional Transport Authority has directed autorickshaw drivers to fix flag meters on their vehicles at the earliest and warned them of action if they failed to comply with the direction.

In a press release issued here on Saturday, the authority said it had received complaints by people of harassment by autorickshaw drivers.

This had forced the authority to issue the direction.

Electrocuted

HASSAN MAY 30. One person was electrocuted at Mallenahalli in Arsikere taluk on Saturday night.

Prakash (30), a resident of Kalenakopplu village, was electrocuted when he came in contact with a live wire.

Top score

BIDAR MAY 30. Bhavana Roy and Anjali, students of tenth standard at the Kendriya Vidyalaya, Bidar, have scored cent per cent marks in mathematics and Sanskrit in the CBSE examinations.

According to a press release, the school recorded a pass percentage of 98.3 with 113 of the 115 students passing the tenth standard examination.

While Abhishek Kumar Sharma scored 95 per cent marks, Bipinesh Sansar scored 94.8 per cent and Bhavani Roy 94.6 per cent, the release said.

The school had also got cent per cent results in the twelfth standard examination with all the 25 students passing the examination, it said. All students except one had got more than 60 per cent marks and the topper, Himanshu Chahar, had secured 92.2 per cent marks, the release added.

Accident

BIDAR MAY 30. Two persons were killed and one was seriously injured in a road accident on the Mumbai-Hyderabad national highway near Halli village in Basavakalyan taluk on Sunday.

According to the police, Gopal, alias, Mahadev Patil (35) of Saidapur village and Dayanand Narayan Patil (30) of Talabhog died on the spot when their motorcycle and a lorry collided.

The lorry later hit a pedestrian, Vijay Kumar of Talabhog, injuring him seriously, they added.

A case has been registered at the Basavkalyan traffic police station.

CPI(M) criticises KPTCL

TUMKUR MAY 30. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL) and the electricity supply companies to shed "anti-consumer'' attitude. The party's State Committee Secretary, G.N. Nagaraj, the Secretary of its district unit, Syed Mujib, and the senior leader of the party, B. Umesh, told presspersons here on Sunday that the corporation and the companies favoured privatisation of the power sector in the name of economic reforms. Their action was causing inconvenience to the consumers, they alleged.

Rectified spirit seized

CHAMARAJANAGAR MAY 30. The Punajanor Range Forest Officer, Venkate Gowda, and his staff seized a lorry at Punajanoor Forest Gate near here on Saturday and recovered 3,500 litres of rectified spirit. Sources said the lorry carrying 125 cans of rectified spirit was going to Tamil Nadu from Mysore. The lorry driver and the cleaner managed to escape.

Youth drowned at Sirsi

SIRSI MAY 30. Aravind (22) of Bangalore drowned at the Shivaganga Falls here on Friday. The police said Aravinda had come to Sirsi with his friends, Radheshyam and Karthik, for sight seeing. The body of Aravinda was recovered on Saturday.

Marriage law violated?

BELLARY MAY 30. At least 20 under-aged boys and girls were among the 200 couples who were said to have entered into wedlock at a mass marriage at Kurgodu in Bellary taluk today. According to reports received here, the mass marriage was organised as part of the three-day "Pattada Devara Mahotsava" at the Kallugudeshwara Temple. S.N. Jayaram, Deputy Commissioner, told The Hindu that he had instructed members of the mahotsava committee not to violate the marriage law. He would seek details regarding the mass marriage and order an inquiry if the law was violated, he added.

Woman dies in accident

TUMKUR MAY 30. A woman died in a road accident here on Sunday. The police gave the name of the victim as Sujatha (50) of Vinobhanagar here. The accident occurred at K. Lakkappa Circle. Sujatha, who had admitted her daughter to a maternity home in the city, was returning home when an unidentified vehicle hit her, the police said.

Lightning claims a life

BIDAR MAY 30. A woman died when lightning struck her at Kotigehalwadi in Bhalki taluk on Sunday. The police said Kamalabai Lakshman (35) of Beeri (B) Tanda was standing under a tree when the incident occurred. She was returning home from Kotigehalwadi. Santhosh Ramachandra (14) and Shankar Sangram (35) were injured in the incident.

Chamber's plea to Dharam

BIDAR MAY 30. The Bidar Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to take steps to develop Bidar district by establishing industries, promoting tourism, and encouraging farmers to take up animal husbandry. In a letter, the chamber president, B.G. Shetkar, appealed to Mr. Singh to complete the process of establishing a veterinary university in Bidar.

Crop destroyed

Sirsi May 30. About 5,000 plantain trees were destroyed and paddy seedlings washed away from the fields in a storm at Banavasi in Sirsi taluk on Saturday night. Heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunder lashed the eastern part of Sirsi.

Snake bite

Sirsi May 30. Suma (33), wife of Ramachandra Hegde of Badrapur village near Banavasi, died after being bitten by a snake on Friday night. Two snakes fell on a sleeping Suma at midnight and one of them bit. She died on the way to hospital. The police have registered a case.

Rainfall

MANGALORE May 30. Sullia received 22 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Sunday. The Bajpe airport received 9.5 mm of rainfall during the period. Belthangady recorded 11.6 mm of rainfall, Uppinangady 2 mm and Puttur 0.6 mm. There was no rain in Bantwal and Mangalore.

Protest

MANGALORE May 30. Members of the Akshara Dasoha Workers' Association will stage a protest from June 3, demanding continuation of the services of the cooks working for the midday meal scheme. At a meeting convened by the association in Belthangady recently, the members demanded that those employed under the scheme during the academic year 2003-04 be allowed to continue in service in the new academic year. Memorandums would be sent to the Government officials concerned, the members added.

Arrested

MANGALORE May 30. The Kankanady Police have arrested seven persons, including a gram panchayat member, in connection with the recent murder of Jagadish at Valacchilapadav.

The arrested are the Adyar Gram Panchayat member, Umarabba; Jubeir, M.K. Nazeer, Ashraf, Abdul Saleem, Prashanth and Rohit. They have been remanded in judicial custody till June 10.

Ends life

Udupi May 30. A woman reportedly committed suicide at Pernankila in Hiriyadka Police Station limits on Saturday. According to the police, Shobha (32), wife of Umesh, committed suicide allegedly because she was unable to bear the torture of her in-laws.

Her sister, Pratibha, said in a complaint that Shobha and Umesh had been married for one-and-a-half years. She left her mother's home at 10 a.m. on Saturday and her body was found 1.5 km away from her husband's house in the Pernankila forest at night. The police said the tahsildar had conducted an inquest and further investigations were on.

Suicide

MANGALORE May 30. A woman committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at Kilinjar Neerapalke near Kuppepadav in Bajpe Police Station limits. The deceased has been identified as Rathi (55).

According to the police, she doused herself with kerosene and set herself ablaze when her husband and son had gone to a hospital. The Bajpe Police have registered a case.

Rally today

Mysore May 30. The Indian Medical Association will observe Anti-Tobacco Day on Monday as part of the worldwide programme launched by the World Health Organisation.

A rally will be taken out in the city at 9.30 a.m. in which students from various nursing schools and medical colleges will participate.

The objective is to create public awareness on the ills of tobacco and help them kick the habit of smoking. The rally will pass through the main thoroughfares of the city and terminate at the JK Grounds.

Sentenced

Mysore May 30. The III Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate sentenced Karthik Mahadevappa to five years imprisonment for throwing acid on a girl.

The victim, Shalini, suffered burns on her face when Karthik threw acid on her in September 1994. The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 30,000 on Karthik. The Nazarbad police had registered a case and filed the chargesheet in the case.

Dies of injuries

Chamarajanagar May 30. Govinda (15) of Koudalli village in Kollegal taluk who was injured after a lorry hit him at Hanur on Saturday died in a hospital in Kamagere.

The Hanur Police have registered a case. The police said Govinda used to sell flowers.
