Cleanliness drive launched

NEW DELHI MAY 30. A "shramdaan'' for maintaining cleanliness was organised at Old Delhi railway station today where the Chief Traffic Manager of Delhi division, Ajay Anand, along with 250 railwaymen including officers, coolies and vendors actively participated. Garbage was removed from Platform No. 1 A and from around the railway tracks.

Appreciating the efforts of the railwaymen, Mr. Anand said the basic aim behind such a drive in which officers and staff participated jointly was to create team spirit and remove the distance between the two levels. Such activities also generate awareness among the employees and the passengers towards cleanliness, he added.

The passengers on the platforms also appreciated the act of joining hands in a collective manner for maintaining cleanliness.

Hard work pays

NEW DELHI MAY 30. Himanshi Manaktala of Salwan Public School, Rajinder Nagar, secured 94 per cent in the Central Board of Secondary Education's Class X examinations.

She scored 97 per cent marks in both mathematics and science and technology and received A1 grade in all her five subjects. Himanshi, who plans to become a doctor, attributes her success to determination and hard work.

Training for IT students

NEW DELHI MAY 30. The Vice-Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), H. P. Dikshit, today inaugurated the placement orientation for students of Bachelor of Information Technology and Advance Diploma in Information Technology.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dikshit said in view of the tough competition in the IT sector, the University considered it important to train its students for placement. He emphasised that students should be proficient in communication and futuristic skills. He informed the participants that the role of a University was to empower through training in developing thought process.

Moral education camp held

NEW DELHI MAY 30. About 400 students participated in the weeklong camp on moral education organised by the Jain Path Samiti in association with the Digambar Jain Naitik Shiksha Samiti at Digambar Jain Mandir, Dharampura which concluded here today with a rally.

The rally started from the Jain Mandir and concluded at Digambar Jain Lal Mandir. The students participating in the rally vowed to remain vegetarian. Displaying banners, they raised slogans in support of moral education. Gifts were presented to the students on the occasion, a media release said.

Workshop for AIDS workers

NEW DELHI MAY 30. Doctors, trainers and persons working in the field of AIDS/HIV, who had gathered in the Capital for a two-day national dissemination workshop, discussed the experience of workers from all over the country and the feedback to various HIV/AIDS projects operational in the country. Organised by the Population Council, the workshop, which ended this past week, sought to improve the well-being and reproductive health of current and future generations around the world.

Speaking at the workshop National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) director Meenakshi Datta Ghosh, said, "NACO is expanding its agenda for the research to include some of the emerging problems such as studies on HIV-TB interaction, HIV-HCV interaction and dynamics specially among intravenous drug users. We definitely look forward to Population Council for a fruitful partnership with NACO in these emerging fields.''

She also added that NACO was also looking forward to strengthen the public-private partnership for strengthening the fight against AIDS care in the private sector, workplace intervention and providing of care, treatment and support to people living with HIV/AIDS.
