Minister appeals for calm

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, MAY 30. The Minister for Panchayat Raj, J.C. Diwakar Reddy, consoled the families of the victims of group clashes at his native place in Jutur village in Pedda Pappur mandal of the district today. He appealed to the villagers to shun hatred.

He first went to the family of Ramakrishna, who was killed in the group clash, and later visited other families. In all, seven houses and eight bullock carts were reduced to ashes and another seven houses and four carts were damaged partially in the fire set off by one group. The attackers also damaged a drinking water borewell.

Speaking to the media, the Minister said the clashes in the villages had nothing to do with the differences between the followers of the Congress and the TDP. Both the victims and the attackers belonged to one group, he said.

He alleged that the TDP was trying to gain political mileage out of the incident by attributing it to the differences between the TDP and Congress followers.

TDP leaders called on the Superintendent of Police yesterday and urged him to provide security to the life of TDP followers.

Meanwhile, men belonging to the TDP group, whose houses and other properties were torched by rivals, left the village fearing for their life, leaving women and children behind.

Fact-finding team

Our Special Correspondent in Hyderabad adds: The Telugu Desam is deputing a fact-finding team, consisting of three senior leaders, to Jutur for a first-hand assessment into the alleged torching of houses of some of its workers and clashes between TDP and Congress groups.

The former Minister, K.E. Krishnamurthy, the Politburo member, P. Prabhakar Reddy, and M. Jagannadham, MP, would visit the affected village on Monday.
