Keltron triumphs
KAYALPATNAM,
MAY 30.
Keltron Football Club, Kannur lifted the Moulana Abulkalam Azad Memorial Trophy, defeating Octopus Marine Sports Club, Chennai 3-0 in the final of the 39th annual All-India Football tournament, conducted by the United Sports club here on Sunday.
Keltron emerged winner but the team underwent many anxious moments in the first session when the Chennai team came near scoring twice.
Octopus was on the offensive from the start and could have taken the lead in the 20th minute when striker T. Senthilkumar's 20-yard powerful shot missed the target. However, Keltron took the lead in the 35th minute, when P.T. Swamy headed in off a fine cross from the right from Diwakaran.
In the 43rd minute, V. Senthilkumar cut past a defender inside the box and went close to the goal, beating goalkeeper Ranjithkumar who had advanced, but sent the ball out to the disappointment of Octopus supporters.
From then on, Keltron mounted pressure and secured the second goal in the 63rd minute, when midfielder Chandran found the target with the long-ranger.
Mr. N.S. Mohan, vice-president (Works), Dhrangadhra Chemical Works, Sahupuram, presided and distributed prizes.
