JD(S) workers unhappy with coalition

By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN, MAY 30. The workers of the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) in the district are finding it tough to come to terms with the formation of the first-ever coalition Government in the State. The electorate in the district this time has gone with the Janata Dal (Secular). The party won six of the eight Assembly seats and lost one to the Congress by a slender margin.

After the jubilation of the party's victory over the Congress, the Janata Dal (Secular) workers are now "forced" to compromise with the Congress activists. They are in no mood to celebrate the appointment of Siddaramaiah as Deputy Chief Minister. It is said that a few Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs, disappointed over the alliance, abstained from the swearing-in ceremony.

Workers of both the parties are apprehensive that, the "understanding" would affect the prospects of the parties and would indirectly help the Bharatiya Janata Party.

As there had been a straight fight between both the parties in all the eight Assembly constituencies in the district, the workers are embarrassed to join hands with their rivals and are terming the alliance "unholy."

The secretary of the district unit of the Congress, Hari Gopal, who was injured in a clash between the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) workers in Aldur on April 26, said that he was committed to the decision of the party's High Command. Another Congress worker, who was injured in the clash, said that forming the Government with a party, which he and others had opposed vehemently over the last four years was "self-deception."
