MANGALORE, MAY 30. It is a year since the city corporation laid the foundation stone for concreting the stretch of road between Lady Hill and Urva Stores. A dream project of the former Mayor, M. Shashidhar Hegde, the project was estimated to cost Rs. 1 crore. If completed, the road would link the four-lane arterial road from Kottara Chowki to Bunts' Hostel Circle through Mahatma Gandhi Road and Kudmul Ranga Rao Road which have been already concreted. The foundation stone was laid on May 31 2003 in a hurry as Mr. Hegde's term was coming to an end. K. Diwakar who became the Mayor later did not pursue the project. This had led to a rift between Mr. Hegde and Mr. Diwakar and the former district in-charge Minister, B. Ramanatha Rai. The stretch between Kottara Chowki and Urva Stores and that between PVS Circle and Lady Hill have been concreted. The problem now is that the narrow stretch between Lady Hill and Urva Stores has become a traffic bottleneck. The road is not being maintained in the hope that it will be concreted.
