Cloudy sky

CHENNAI, MAY 30. The sky will be generally cloudy on Monday with the possibility of a shower or thundershower in some areas.

On Sunday, Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 34.1 degrees Celsius while Meenambakkam recorded 33.4. Both the places recorded a low of 25.6 degrees Celsius. Humidity was 76 and at 75 per cent.

Power cut

Power supply will be suspended between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Valasaravakkam, Padi, Vanuvampet, Sowcarpet and MMDA Colony areas for maintenance work.

Programme

Crescent Engineering College organised a six-day faculty development programme on "Mechatronics" sponsored by Anna University. The objective of the programme was to train the faculty members of various engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu to keep abreast of the technological advancements in manufacturing methods. Representatives from 18 engineering colleges affiliated to the university participated.

Conference

An international conference on `soft computing' was organised by the Department of Computer Applications, Computer Science and Engineering and Information and Technology of the Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research.

S. Jagathrakshakan, Chancellor, Bharath Deemed University, Sundaram Appan, chairman, Computer Society of India, and K.P. Thooyamani, Registrar, spoke.

Aid sought

Kalaiselvi Karunalaya Social Welfare Society is setting up a new building at Mogappair West to shelter abandoned babies. The organisation has sought assistance from philanthropists for the building with a capacity for 50 babies. Last year, the society took into its fold 28 babies under a cradle-baby scheme.

Top score

S. Swaminathan, student of the Sri Ahobila Mutt Oriental High School at Maduranthakam, scored 178 out of 200 marks in Sanskrit in Oriental School Leaving Certificate examination. His total marks were 524 out of 600 in the examination to take school the second spot after Pavankumar who scored 525 marks. Third-placed N. Karthikeyan scored 506 marks.
