By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MAY 30. Students set to join engineering colleges can pick up a few lessons on computers, software and hardware, thanks to the initiative of Institute for Electronic Governance (IEG), a wing of the Department of IT in association with the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE).

The IEG is starting a `Computer Workshop' for EAMCET qualified candidates at the Academic Staff College, JNTU campus, in Kukatpally that covers introduction to computer hardware, assembly, trouble shooting, Linux installation, Linux utilities, C programming, Open Office, Internet browsing and Web programming. The course fee is Rs. 1,500. However, students with rank below 1,000 would get a discount of Rs. 200 and those figuring below 5,000 would get a discount of Rs.100.

At a presentation on the programme here on Sunday, Subba Rao Ghanta of the IT and Communications Department and T. Srinivasulu Reddy, Senior Manager (projects), Centre for Good Governance, said students would get 60 hours of training during the 12-day course. CDs containing software of Linux and audiovisual course content would be given. The programme starts on May 31 and admission would be on first-come-first-served basis. The contact person is M. Saroja (32387635 and 23542189).

At the end of the course, students will be in a position to assemble their own computer apart from learning a few programmes.

Explaining the student friendly services being launched by the CGG, Prof. Srinivasulu Reddy said a call centre was being opened from June 1 and EAMCET rank holders can know their local area rank by dialling the toll free number of 1100. Efforts are also on to feed in the entire information on college, seats and the last ranks admitted in each college on the APSCHE Website. This service will be available from June 6 and students have to key in their hall-ticket number.
