Sharp drop in humidity

The Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 37.9 degree Celsius and a minimum of 26.6 degree Celsius on Sunday. Humidity dropped from 80 per cent in the morning to 60 per cent in the evening.

Cable operators' body elected

Over 300 cable TV operators, excluding Gemini and Teja TV, from across the State met at the Sibar Disney Land on Sunday and elected office-bearers for the welfare association formed by them. The new body, the Andhra Pradesh Progressive Cable Network Welfare Association, unanimously elected T.G. Venkatesh its honorary president, S. Venkat Reddy and D. Srinivas Prasad honorary advisors, D. Ashok Reddy president, K. Shamsundar and Nagesh vice-presidents, V. Rajamraju general secretary, S. Suresh and I. Ramakrishna secretaries, K. Subba Reddy treasurer and Jayram executive member.

Chess tourney opens

The VGTM UDA Vice-Chairman, V.N. Vishnu, on Sunday inaugurated the 1st Andhra Lightning Chess Championship organised by the local branch of the State Bank of Tranvancore at Vemula Kurmaiah High School in Arundelpet.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Vishnu said chess was a healthy game, which could very well act as a stress-buster, especially for Government servants and businessmen. He said the Urban Development Authority had plans to organise a national `B' chess championship in co-ordination with Andhra Pradesh Chess Association to coincide with the silver jubilee year of the VGTM UDA.

Written test for FP dealership

The written test that was to be conducted by the Revenue Department for those interested in securing dealership of fair price (FP) shops in March, but had to be cancelled in view of the election code, will now be held on June 14.

In a statement here on Sunday, the Revenue Divisional Officer, Bhanu Prasad, said the exam would be conducted in the Vijayawada Sub-Collectorate.

Anti-tobacco day

Members of the Government dental college here propose to take out a `human march', seeking a ban on tobacco on Monday on the occasion of Anti-Tobacco Day.

They would carry banners and placards denouncing the hazardous effects of tobacco.

The procession would start from the college and reach the District Collector's camp office where the members would submit a memorandum to the Collector.
