UDHAGAMANDALAM, MAY 30. Despite the heavy rain, a reasonably attractive fruit and vegetable show was organised by the Nilgiris Flower and Fruit Show Committee at the Sim's Park in Coonoor today. On display was a variety of fruits including different types of mangoes, rubber fruit, durian, butter fruit, passion fruit, mangosteen, plums, pears and peaches. Also hill vegetables like cauliflowers and carrots were exhibited. The show was inaugurated by the Agriculture Minister, P. Annavi, in the presence of the Collector, K. Sellamuthu, the State Agriculture Secretary, R. Kannan, and the Joint Director of Horticulture, A. Sankaran. Distributing prizes to owners of fruit gardens and those who excelled in the competitions, Mr. Annavi said that remunerative crop diversification schemes were being implemented to help the small tea growers of the Nilgiris. The prize for the best-maintained private fruit garden (above one acre) went to Global Tea Brokers of Coonoor. J.E. Vaz won the trophy for the best-maintained private fruit garden (below one acre). The cup for the best fruit garden attached to institutions and schools went to Saint Joseph's Higher Secondary School, Coonoor. Varadharajan won the prize for the best collection of cut flowers, while E. Krishnappa of Ooty lifted the cup for the best exhibitor of temperate vegetables. The prize for the best collection of tropical vegetables was won by K.M. Ramesh Anand of Ooty. The Sericulture Department won the prize for the best stall.
