Govt. urged to permit toddy tapping

By Our Special Correspondent

MADURAI, MAY 30 . The Nadar Mahajana Sangam has appealed to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to take steps to rejuvenate the palm industry.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the general secretary, G. Karikkolraj, said the board constituted by the Government for the palm industry had become defunct because adequate funds were not allotted to it. This resulted in a delay in issue of licences for tapping `neera'.

The police, he alleged, had been foisting cases on palm workers in various parts of the State. Even after the Lok Sabha election, the cases had not been withdrawn, and new cases were booked against palm workers in Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Erode, Salem and Namakkal districts.

He appealed to the Chief Minister to invite the representatives of the Nadar Mahajana Sangam, the Dakshinamara Nadar Sangam, the palm gur cooperative societies and palm workers for talks to discuss the steps required to revive the industry. Toddy tapping, if permitted, would benefit the families of 10 lakh palm workers, who were languishing in penury, the memorandum said.

In another memorandum sent to the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, Mr. Karikkolraj demanded that a Nadar MP be included in the Cabinet. He pointed out that the community, with its predominant presence in the southern districts, had helped in the election of all nominees of the Democratic Progressive Alliance.

The Nadar Mahajana Sangam appealed to Ms. Sonia to recommend to the Prime Minister to include an MP from the southern districts in the Cabinet, in deference to the wishes of the president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, M. Karunanidhi.
