DAVANGERE, MAY 30. There are three strong contenders for ministerial berths from Davangere district in the first-ever coalition Government in the State. While Shamanur Shivashankarappa, veteran Congress leader and treasurer of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, and Y. Nagappa are the two contenders from the Congress, Mahima Patel, the Janata Dal (Secular) MLA from Channagiri and son of the former Chief Minister, the late J. H. Patel, is also in the race. Mr. Shivashankarappa, who has been associated with the Congress for more than four decades, is considered close to many senior party leaders, including the Chief Minister, Dharam Singh. Dr. Nagappa, who turned down the post of chairman of a board in the previous government is trying for a place in the ministry and is said to be mobilising the support of the leaders of his Kuruba community.
