Cuddapah
By Our Staff Reporter
CUDDAPAH, MAY 31. Telugu Desam Party councillors walked out of the Cuddapah Municipal Council's general body meeting on Monday after heated arguments with Congress councillors over the extension of lease to Narayana Education Society in Muddukrishnama Naidu auditorium, built by the municipality. The TDP councillors -- S. Mohiuddin Saheb, Nazeer Ahmed, T. Sriramulu, and B.N. Babu -- and the BJP councillor, V.V. Chalapathi, maintained that there was no need to examine the application of the Narayana Education Society's director, Ramadevi, seeking a six-month extension of lease and wanted the council to issue directions to the society to vacate the auditorium. The Municipal Chairperson, Bola Padmavathi, said the application for extension was examined as per rules and in tune with the opinion of majority of members the extension was granted. Several councillors questioned the proposed appointment of 15 sanitary workers, without considering 75 workers deployed by three societies for the work. Ms. Padmavathi assured them that the 15 workers would be engaged only whenever necessary. The Congress councillors also questioned the extension of contract to a private sanitary contractor, Nageswara Rao, and to private tractor owners entrusted with garbage disposal, though their work was far from satisfactory. The municipal officials explained that fresh tenders could not be called as the election code of conduct was then in force. Some members alleged that officials evinced greater interest in repairs to private tractors rather than to municipality tractors. The meeting decided to use the Rs. 1.80 lakhs donations received for assisting the Gujarat earthquake victims to build public amenities in Cuddapah town, as the members could not reach a consensus on sending the amount to the Chief Minister's Relief Funds. Some members sought a budget session soon. The councillors -- Bala Ankanna, M.K. Ratna Kumari, K. Fakruddin, Azra Parveen, Indira, Nirmala, Sridevi and Rajeswari -- and officials participated.
