Thanjavur
By Our Staff Reporter
THANJAVUR, MAY 31. The omission and deletion of names of voters from the voters' list in the Thanjavur municipal area dominated the municipal council meeting here today. Councillors complained that they had given lists of names of new voters to be included in the list but they were not included. They said that many names were deleted. Sundaraj, a councillor, said he gave a list of 300 names of voters to be included in the list but only three were found in the list finally. The Municipal Commissioner, Mannar, said the municipality had sent the list of 10,575 voters, given by the councillors, to the tahsildar for verification and inclusion. Jayabal, another councillor, said the Municipal Commissioner was trying to shift the blame on revenue officials. He said he had given names of 148 voters but only two names were included in the list. Arumugam, another councillor, complained that many names were deleted from the list. Issue of submission of `diary' by the Municipal Commissioner and the Municipal Health Officer to the council was also debated in the council. Boopathy, Vice-Chairman of the council, said the Municipal Health Officer, Seran, was not submitting his diary. Mr. Seran said there was no need to submit his diary since he was working on deputation from the public health department. The councillors asked the chairman, K. Sultan, to record the reply of the Health Officer and seek clarification from the Director of Health. They said the previous health officer did not reply like this and submitted his diary to the Commissioner. T. K. G. Neelamegam said the underground drainage work was not properly done in the town. Pits were not closed immediately and roads were not repaired after laying pipelines. Thus they remained as death traps and a child fell into the pit and died today, he alleged.
