A beaming K. R. Suresh Reddy who will be elected Speaker on Tuesday.
HYDERABAD, MAY 31. Kethireddy Suresh Reddy is to become Speaker of the 12th Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. At 45 years, arguably one of the youngest Speakers of the State Assembly, Mr. Reddy will be formally declared elected to the post on Tuesday. His was the only nomination received as all parties supported his candidature on Monday. The Chief Minister and Leader of the House, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, presented the nomination papers on behalf of Mr. Reddy to the pro tem Speaker, P. Sambasiva Raju. The Leader of the Opposition, N. Chandrababu Naidu, leaders of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), CPI, CPI(M), BJP, Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), Janata Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, CPI-ML, Samajwadi Party and some individual members of the Congress also followed suit. The Chief Minister set the ball rolling for a consensus among all parties on the candidature of Mr. Reddy. In tune with the convention not to have competition for the highest office of the legislature, Dr. Reddy invited leaders of all the friendly parties of the Congress to his chambers in the lobbies of the Assembly to suggest the name of Mr. Reddy for the post. After the mandate of the friendly parties was received, Dr. Reddy deputed the Finance and Legislative Affairs Minister, K. Rosaiah, to talk to Mr. Chandrababu Naidu. The TDP president did not have any objection to the proposal, paving way for unanimous election. Mr. Reddy is respected in political circles for his unassuming and modest nature. He endeared himself to rival parties with his cultured and soft-spoken behaviour. Mr. Reddy was known for depth in analysis and witty comments. Mr. Reddy was born on May 25, 1959, and had his schooling in Little Flower here. He graduated in Economics, Politics and Public Administration from Nizam College. A native of Chautpalli village of Kammarpalli mandal in Nizamabad district, Mr. Reddy represented the Balkonda Assembly constituency in Nizamabad since 1989. Speaking to reporters after the House adjourned, Mr. Reddy said he had no regrets at not getting a place in the Cabinet.
