Protection of Rights Day

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM MAY 31. The Bharathiya Mazdoor Sangh has decided to observe June 10 as protection of Rights Day all over the State. Demonstrations and dharnas will be organised in all the district centres as part of it. The pro-CPI Joint Council of State Service Organisations has come out against what it described as the move to curtail the democratic right to protest and react. The general secretary of the organisation, K. N. K. Namboodiri, asked the Government to take steps to protect these rights.

NDA exam results

The UPSC has announced the results of the National Defence Academy and the Naval Academy Examination - (II), 2003. They are available for reference at the Press Information Bureau, Kurunganoor— Marappalam Road, at Pattom in Thiruvananthapuram.

Confederation demand

The Confederation of Consumer Vigilance Centre has demanded the withdrawal of the fees imposed by the Government for filing complaints in the consumer fora. In a resolution adopted by its general body today, the organisation expressed the fear that it would keep the bona fide complaints away from the fora. It wanted at least cases involving up to Rs. 1 lakh to be exempted from the fees. In the case of cases involving over Rs. 1 lakhs, the complainant should be allowed to remit the fees in stamp form. The meeting was chaired by Punchakari Ravi, president and the resolution was moved by A. Ayyappan Nair, general secretary of the organisation.

`Praveshanolsav' on June 2

The `Praveshanolsav', the celebration of children admitted to the first standard in the new academic year, will be held all over the State on June 2, the day on which the schools reopen after the summer vacation. The State- level inauguration of the event will be held at the Government Mappila U. P. School, Karuvamboyil near Thamarassery of Kozhikode district. The Minister for Education, Nalakath Soopy, will inaugurate the function to be held in this connection and will also deliver the message for children in the new academic year. The programme is to be held in over 11,270 schools in the State under the auspices of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). There are over five lakh children newly-admitted to these schools, according to an official release issued here today.

Plea to induct Sudheeran

KOLLAM MAY 31. The three-day national delegates conference of the Ezhava Mahajana Sabha which concluded at Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday has called upon the Congress leadership to induct the Congress leader, V.M. Sudheeran, as a minister in the Union Cabinet. In a statement issued here, it was mentioned that the need for the inclusion of Mr. Sudheeran in the Union Cabinet was adopted and passed as a resolution by the Sabha. It was pointed out that Congress leaders, Shivraj Patil and P.M. Sayyed, who lost the elections were included in the Cabinet. Mr. Sudheeran had lost by only a slender margin. A separate resolution called for a CBI probe into the `mysterious death' of Swami Sashwatheekananda and ensure proper representation for the Ezhava community in the boards of various Government undertakings and corporations.

Film on Basheer's novel

KOZHIKODE MAY 31. An animation telefilm on noted novelist Vaikkom Mohammed Basheer's story `Anavariyum ponkurishum', is in the process of being completed. At a press conference here today Najeeb Kuttipuram and others said the 3D character animation film is being made under the banner of Origa Creations, Multimedia Production Division of the Thai Group of Companies.

The telefilm seeks to portray the characters in this popular novel of Basheer in a subtle manner, bringing out the peculiarities as far as possible. They claimed that this was the first time that a 3D character film was being made in India.

Move against Governor

Kochi MAY 31. A notice for moving a resolution requesting the President, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, to remove the Kerala and Karnataka Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi from the post has been given to the Kerala High Court Advocates' Association by a group of 50 lawyers.

In the resolution, the lawyers said that the appointment of Mr. Chaturvedi who was a former Comptroller and Auditor-General of India was violative of section 148 (4) of the Constitution. According to section 148(4), the Comptroller and Auditor-General shall not be eligible for further office either under the Government of India or under the Government of any State after he/she had ceased to hold his/her office.

Therefore, Mr. Chaturvedi was not eligible to be appointed, as Governor and he should be removed from the post.

The resolution also requested the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil to take steps to remove him from the post of Governor.

CPI(M) denies graft charges

KOLLAM May 31. The CPI(M) district secretary, K. Rajagopal, has said that the allegations of corruption being raised against the Kollam Municipal Corporation were totally baseless. In a statement here today, he said the allegations were part of a conspiracy hatched by the Opposition UDF members to defame the Corporation authorities. Mr. Rajagopal said the rumours that CPI(M) was planning to move a no-confidence motion against the Deputy Mayor, G. Jayapalan Pillai, was also baseless.

Fisherman missing

ALAPPUZHA May 31. A fisherman who went to the sea from Alappuzha has been reported missing. Officials of the fisheries control room said George alias Babu (47), Arasarkadavil house, Alappuzha beach ward who went to fishing in an air filled boat from Alappuzha beach had returned. They said search was on to find the missing person.

Suspected NDF activists held

THRISSUR May 31. Two suspected National Development Front (NDF) activists were arrested by the Peramangalam police here on Monday on charges of having barged into the Lourdepuram school when a convention of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was in progress. They were arrested under IPC sections 447 and 153 (A). The arrested were Liran (24), of Vatakkekkadu and Rajeeb (21) of Chavakkad. They have been remanded to judicial custody for 15 days.

School centenary fete

The Excise Minister, K. V. Thomas, will inaugurate the centenary celebrations of the St. Sebastian's School, Chittattukara, here on June 3. The school headmaster, Kuttikkat Antony Babu, told reporters here on Monday that the yearlong celebrations would include sports and literary competitions, cultural meetings and presentation of prizes to students who passed this year's SSLC examinations. The Archbishop, Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, would preside over the function.

New building inaugurated

The Mayor, K. Radhakrishnan, inaugurated the new building of the Association for Mentally Handicapped Adults (AMHA) at Kanattukara here on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Radhakrishnan said voluntary organisations such as AMHA could do a lot more than the Government in the rehabilitation of mentally challenged adults. Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA, presided over the function. The school run by AMHA has rehabilitated 20 mentally challenged adults.

Ritual held

Hundreds of children were introduced to the world of letters at the Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours here on Monday. The ceremony, `Yesu Namam Kurikkal', was led by the Rector, Fr. Raphael Vadakkan.

Man killed in accident

THRISSUR MAY 31. A man was killed in a road accident at Akamala, Wadakkanchery, near here on Monday. The police have identified the deceased as Rajan (38) of Vettikkattiri. Rajan, an employee of the Shoranur railway canteen, was hit by a private vehicle and died as he was being taken to the hospital, the police said. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested.

Criticised

The Surya Gardens Residents' Association has protested against the reported move of the Corporation to make Kovilakathumpadom the disposal site for waste from Laloor. In a statement here on Monday, the Association said that depositing the waste at Kovilakathumpadom would harm the health of the residents and affect ground water resources. The authorities were yet to implement the High Court order to set up a drainage system at Kovilakathumpadom, the release added.

Seminar

KOTTAYAM MAY 31. The four-day lecture series on Group Theory by Prof. Srinivasa Rao, former professor of Institute of Mathematical Science, Chennai, commences here on Tuesday. The lecture series jointly organised by the George Sudarshan Centre and George M. Thomas Endowment Trust would be inaugurated by Babu Joseph, former Vice-Chancellor of Cusat at the CMS College. The first lecture of the series, on the `The Life and Works of Srinivasa Ramanujan' by Prof. Rao would be open to the public.
